Forewords

As a method for closing cutaneous wounds, the technique of suturing has been a part of medicine for hundreds of years. Over the centuries, although suture materials and aspects of the technique have evolved, the goals remain the same: closing dead space, supporting and strengthening wounds until healing increases their tensile strength, approximating skin edges for an aesthetically pleasing and functional result, and minimizing the risks of bleeding and infection.

Skin laceration, minor skin defect, skin lesion, and skin scar have become everyday matters in clinician practices. Many clinicians have mastered basic suturing skill before to provide care for their patients. However, the complexity of the wound, prone-to-infection wound, and large excision wound made many clinicians must reconsider their suturing techniques. High expectations from patients nowadays that prefer more aesthetically result from wound healing also become a point that clinicians must consider.

Developed for the clinician who has mastered basic suturing, this program will help increase ability to manage complex wounds as well as to achieve the aesthetically result of wound healing. This course is designed to help develop understanding and hands-on skills to achieve the very best attainable wound closure results for patients. Advanced topics will include concept in phases of wound healing and the best scar result, fine suture instrument and material handling, demonstration and hands-on practices of core suturing skills, demonstration and practices of bloodless and painless local anesthesia, how to manage wound on specific body parts.

Emergency physicians, family physicians, residents’ in-training, surgeons, obstetric and gynecologist, will find this skill workshop an essential to develop their abilities to higher level. Through a continuing medical update and hands-on course such as this, we reminded on how to provide for the best possible evidence-based care in facing patients with skin wound and lesions. It is hoped that participants will have significant advanced skills in skin suturing to provide the best results and enhance quality of service of the hospital to future patients.
